Walter Williams: Suffer No Fools – Putting His Education First


I often tell people that I am very, very happy that I got virtually all of my education before it became fashionable for white people to like black people. So what that meant is that when I got a C, it was an honest-to-God C. When I got an A, it was an honest-to-God A. They weren’t practicing affirmative action, and they didn’t give a damn about my self-esteem.

  1. I recently received a letter from a black student I had in North Minneapolis. She said, “I wanted to thank you for giving me my first F and holding me accountable to standards. It was the first time someone said that I was capable of meeting standards rather than making standards meet me. I had to retake your class and I earned a legitmate C and I was proud to earn it. That lesson has affected me (and now my own students) ever since.."
