Voice Teacher Reacts to Marco Antonio Solís & Los Bukis – Navidad Sin Ti

Hi everyone, Andy Davis here again from
Master of Voice, a channel with reactions to performers from across the world. In
this episode, I’m going to be reacting to Marco Antonio Solis and his band Los Bukis. This was a concert back several years ago for Christmas and they’re
performing one of their Christmas songs “Navidad sin ti” or “Christmas without you”.
I’m excited to hear it. So, let’s jump right in. You know, right
off the bat with him, I just feel like he’s a storyteller. He’s just telling me
a story when he starts these songs and a little bit of his phrasing gives me that,
as well, similar to the other song I reacted to by him. So far, there’s a
little bit of disconnect within some of the notes. They’re not smooth and legato
and that is just fine. I really enjoy that phrasing. He’s just starting to tell
this story to the audience and I’m enjoying his voice, as well, especially
when he gets up just a bit into his upper chest voice sound. It almost
becomes a little bit brighter and I enjoy that quality from him. A bit of a
rough translation of the lyrics goes like this, “Another year has gone by, many
things have happened. There’s something we’ve learned, there’s something we’ve
forgotten. But inside of here, in my soul nothing, nothing has changed. I always
have you with me. I continue being so in love. The lights on my tree seemed to
speak of you and, in between pinatas and smiles, I feel that you aren’t here. In
the mirror, I see my reflection consuming my skin and in the agony of this year. I
feel I die without it.” He is already given a lot of emotion in this song, though. Just
facially and also through the color differences he’s giving us in his voice.
Letting the vowels migrate around just a little bit within his mouth to give us
different colors or timbres to the sound. Also, the line has gotten a bit
more legato – connected notes – here. Changing it up just a bit as he
continues to tell this story. I know in the chorus, though, it’s going to start to
say, “Christmas comes and I without you and all this loveliness. I remember the
day I lost you. I don’t know where you are but truly, for your happiness, I make
a toast on this Christmas.” Giving a score volume here. I like the bit of vibrato that comes in to the ends of some of his phrases. When
a vibrato naturally occurs like that, it means that the singer’s voice is free of
any tension in the walls of the throat and he’s just singing with a heartfelt
message here, of course, “Christmas without you.” He’s pouring out his emotions for
what he feels he’s lost and these lyrics describe that. And, of course, Christmas – we
all feel certain emotions sometimes and even regrets from the year. Sometimes the
holidays bring around those type of feelings. But, I like the differences in
tempo of the chorus compared to the verse. Got a bit more of an upbeat
quality here, even though the mood of the lyrics is a bit more down or a bit more
somber. The tempo picked up just a bit. I can see why so many of you enjoyed this
song. Several of you had mentioned it when I’d asked the question about
Christmas or holiday songs from your country. So, I’m enjoying this one. I love a spoken section in a song. It’s just different and changes it up a
bit and I enjoyed that. I think, you know, contrast within a song – whether it be
through dynamics, through phrasing, through tempo – it’s very important for a
song to really appeal to a wide array of audience members and they’re doing a
great job with this. The lyrics go on to say, “The same thing always, always happens
to me when this day comes around. Now I have the present that you begged me for. Then, I look at the picture where I’m with you, pressing into my chest, and I
say Another, another Christmas without you,” and then some of the lyrics go on to
repeat and then into the chorus. Such a good song. I like that tenor quality that comes in. He also, like I’ve mentioned with several
other Spanish-speaking and especially Mexican artists, gives us a bit of a
crack in some of the notes and gives us that ‘call’ sound where they’re really
just pouring emotions. The vowel placement is almost forward, yet nasal, at the
same time giving us a combination of such emotion. And he’s also doing well to
open up with louder sound in this last part of the song. I am so impressed with
him the more I see. They love it. Absolutely. That was so
well done and a cool Christmas song I’ve never heard. So, I enjoyed hearing it. I
hope you all enjoyed this reaction. If you did, please click like and hit

  30. He was the hit singer back in the 80s and 90s w ballads he became a solo singer after 96 I heard after Los bukis. Anyways his lyrics are for some the key that opens the heart ❤

  31. Se quieres comentar artistas españoles échale un vistazo a Rocio Jurado , Isabel Pantoja , Camarón de la Isla…, te quedarás encantado. Un saludo .

  32. 2 Marco Antonio Solis songs reviewed so far and just one for Rocio Durcal. You should have a rule to review only hits. MAS had never been the great vocalist worth of analyzyng, he's known for songwriting habilities. Yes, he's got a distinctive voice but he's not up there with the greatest vocalist.
