School strike for climate – save the world by changing the rules | Greta Thunberg | TEDxStockholm

Translator: Akinori Oyama
Reviewer: Peter van de Ven When I was about eight years old, I first heard about something
called climate change or global warming. Apparently, that was something
humans have created by our way of living. I was told to turn off
the lights to save energy and to recycle paper to save resources. I remember thinking
that it was very strange that humans, who are
an animal species among others, could be capable of changing
the Earth’s climate. Because if we were,
and if it was really happening, we wouldn’t be talking
about anything else. As soon as you’d turn on the TV,
everything would be about that. Headlines, radio, newspapers, you would never read or hear
about anything else, as if there was a world war going on. But no one ever talked about it. If burning fossil fuels was so bad
that it threatened our very existence, how could we just continue like before? Why were there no restrictions? Why wasn’t it made illegal? To me, that did not add up. It was too unreal. So when I was 11, I became ill. I fell into depression, I stopped talking, and I stopped eating. In two months, I lost
about 10 kilos of weight. Later on, I was diagnosed
with Asperger syndrome, OCD and selective mutism. That basically means I only speak
when I think it’s necessary – now is one of those moments. (Applause) For those of us who are on the spectrum, almost everything is black or white. We aren’t very good at lying, and we usually don’t enjoy
participating in this social game that the rest of you seem so fond of. (Laughter) I think in many ways
that we autistic are the normal ones, and the rest of the people
are pretty strange, (Laughter) especially when it comes to
the sustainability crisis, where everyone keeps saying
climate change is an existential threat and the most important issue of all, and yet they just carry on like before. I don’t understand that, because if the emissions have to stop, then we must stop the emissions. To me that is black or white. There are no gray areas
when it comes to survival. Either we go on
as a civilization or we don’t. We have to change. Rich countries like Sweden
need to start reducing emissions by at least 15 percent every year. And that is so that we can stay
below a two-degree warming target. Yet, as the IPCC
have recently demonstrated, aiming instead for 1.5 degrees Celsius would significantly
reduce the climate impacts. But we can only imagine
what that means for reducing emissions. You would think the media
and every one of our leaders would be talking about nothing else, but they never even mention it. Nor does anyone ever mention the greenhouse gases
already locked in the system. Nor that air pollution is hiding a warming so that when we stop burning fossil fuels, we already have an extra level of warming perhaps as high as
0.5 to 1.1 degrees Celsius. Furthermore does hardly
anyone speak about the fact that we are in the midst
of the sixth mass extinction, with up to 200 species
going extinct every single day, that the extinction rate today is between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than what is seen as normal. Nor does hardly anyone ever speak about
the aspect of equity or climate justice, clearly stated everywhere
in the Paris Agreement, which is absolutely necessary
to make it work on a global scale. That means that rich countries need to get down to zero emissions
within 6 to 12 years, with today’s emission speed. And that is so that people
in poorer countries can have a chance to heighten
their standard of living by building some of the infrastructure
that we have already built, such as roads, schools, hospitals, clean drinking water,
electricity, and so on. Because how can we expect
countries like India or Nigeria to care about the climate crisis if we who already have everything
don’t care even a second about it or our actual commitments
to the Paris Agreement? So, why are we not reducing our emissions? Why are they in fact still increasing? Are we knowingly causing
a mass extinction? Are we evil? No, of course not. People keep doing what they do because the vast majority
doesn’t have a clue about the actual consequences
of our everyday life, and they don’t know
that rapid change is required. We all think we know,
and we all think everybody knows, but we don’t. Because how could we? If there really was a crisis, and if this crisis was caused
by our emissions, you would at least see some signs. Not just flooded cities,
tens of thousands of dead people, and whole nations leveled
to piles of torn down buildings. You would see some restrictions. But no. And no one talks about it. There are no emergency meetings,
no headlines, no breaking news. No one is acting
as if we were in a crisis. Even most climate scientists
or green politicians keep on flying around the world,
eating meat and dairy. If I live to be 100,
I will be alive in the year 2103. When you think about the future today,
you don’t think beyond the year 2050. By then, I will, in the best case,
not even have lived half of my life. What happens next? The year 2078, I will celebrate
my 75th birthday. If I have children or grandchildren,
maybe they will spend that day with me. Maybe they will ask me about you, the people who were around, back in 2018. Maybe they will ask
why you didn’t do anything while there still was time to act. What we do or don’t do right now
will affect my entire life and the lives of my children
and grandchildren. What we do or don’t do right now, me and my generation
can’t undo in the future. So when school
started in August of this year, I decided that this was enough. I set myself down on the ground
outside the Swedish parliament. I school striked for the climate. Some people say that I
should be in school instead. Some people say that I should study
to become a climate scientist so that I can “solve the climate crisis.” But the climate crisis
has already been solved. We already have
all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is
to wake up and change. And why should I be studying for a future
that soon will be no more when no one is doing anything
whatsoever to save that future? And what is the point of learning facts
in the school system when the most important facts given by the finest science
of that same school system clearly means nothing
to our politicians and our society. Some people say that Sweden
is just a small country, and that it doesn’t matter what we do, but I think that if a few children
can get headlines all over the world just by not coming to school
for a few weeks, imagine what we could all do
together if you wanted to. (Applause) Now we’re almost at the end of my talk, and this is where people
usually start talking about hope, solar panels, wind power,
circular economy, and so on, but I’m not going to do that. We’ve had 30 years of pep-talking
and selling positive ideas. And I’m sorry,
but it doesn’t work. Because if it would have, the emissions would have gone down by now. They haven’t. And yes, we do need hope, of course we do. But the one thing we need
more than hope is action. Once we start to act,
hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then, and only then, hope will come. Today, we use 100 million
barrels of oil every single day. There are no politics to change that. There are no rules
to keep that oil in the ground. So we can’t save the world
by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change, and it has to start today. Thank you. (Applause)

  1. Ok just a quick thing I love when I see metal and paper straws but plastic still need to be used because disabled people with chronic illnesses like POTTS can only use plastic straws watch Jessica Kelgren-Fozard for more on this subject.

  2. si seulement cette fille réalisé les pays responsables pour cela sont india et chine pas le états-unis et europe. Parle avec ils jeune fille

  3. If we forget what to do to better the planet, so why can't the government take action and dictate rules for people to fallow.
We need reforestation on certain parts of this planet, we need to reduce our reproduction status all over the world.( In China is one child per family, in my country is three per family, but in the US there is no limy. One of my co-workers was on her 8th child at the age of 35).
Instead of new housing construction, lets remodel. Schools need to teach children the benefits of veganism and reforestation. We as parents need to be educated as well with governmental group impositions. There are so many scientists that are able to develop Tesla's energy project, but the government wants us to keep paying for gas and expensive electrical bills. We don't need cars that run on gas, we need solar transportation.
We all need to stand up and fight for a better future of our generations to come.

Boy I got excited! Next time I'll probably be right next to her. Lol

  4. Yeah….key word here is IF.

Why doesn't this little girls parents teach her how to handle the pressures of the world and not encourage her dangerous, obviously media created and directed, delusions. Everything she says is the most extreme alarmist rhetoric used to scare the public and shame us into using unsustainable, expensive, not actually "clean" or carbon free energy. Why does anyone believe or expect someone so young to understand the complicated, nuanced, science of climate change? Especially since she has obviously been inundated by the hysterical claims made by only one side of the debate.

  5. A brave girl indeed. The last scence was heartwarming but a bit cringey, because all people who applauded will probably keep on living in ways that contribute to climate change, and dont prevent it. The girl herself raises awareness of the public on this issue rather effectively but doesn't really present methods to solve it, which is what I'm missing here. Therefore I'll just add a few brief things that everyone can do to live a more climate neural life:

Don't fly and don't eat meat, milk, eggs or cheese. These things are all unnecessary. Especially the whole animal industry, that contributes to most of the green house gases (51%!!!). Therefore we should get our priorities straight and make rational decisions. As a vegan I can add that a plant based diet is not just the best for the climate, but also the best for your health, in preventing and reversing diseases like diabetis, obesity, stroke, high bloodpressue, and cancer, which are however directly caused by the hormones, fats and cholesterol, found in meat, milk, egg and cheese… It might be worth adding that in a vegan diet, no living being has to disgustingly suffer and die for merely the stimulation of something insignificant and primitive as just minutes of simulation of our tastebuds, that's immediately forgotten afterwards anyways…

Every claim in this comment has been scientifically proven.

  6. All I see is a no-nothing kid trying to tell everyone about a hypothesis. Not a Theory or a Law in Science; but a hypothesis? I believe she has handlers in the media.

  7. Another Monumentally Inspirational And Important Speech From You Greta… Your Words Of Truth And Wisdom Are Essential For The People To Here….! The People In Power Around The World Must Listen Carefully To You!… Each Day You Fight.. I Fight With You!… Love You So Much!……..

  9. If you think that humans today could destroy the planet, think again. Nature will prevail, as it always does!

  10. I am not sure, do you strike in summer holidays too? I mean not you Greta, you are busy now in the boat of that rich prince of Monte Carlo. But your fellow comrades, do they strike in summer holiday too? Or just in school time?

  11. Silly little indoctrinated Greta tries to wag the dog … gets bit !! She'll continue to fight well into the next Ice Age !

  12. Nice message. Whoever she is, the most important thing is her message. The planet is dying from the stupidity and cupidity of humans. Just thinking about the many nuclear sites opening every year makes me shiver. One day, they will all explode. Probably human would deserve this but not the rest of living beings. Even, they are still few humans living in harmony with Gaïa. Myself used to work in the biggest financial companies in the City of London; Today, I am beekeeper and so happy… though, would be much more happy if everyone could live green.

  13. My mother just called me to take her to hospital. I will take my bike instead of the car. I hope she'll still be alive when I arrive at her home in 4 days.

  14. She's a puppet being controlled by leftist/socialist puppet masters behind the scenes. Every appearance controlled … serious questions NOT allowed…. Debate NOT allowed…. Because she would be a miserable failure.
A poor victim giving speaches prepared for her by others… (I'd sure like to know where she gets all her money to survive and pay expenses.) Asperger's Syndrome.. Anxiety poses one of the core challenges for people with Asperger’s Syndrome and other types of autism. There is a great deal of anxiety already inherent in the condition itself, which is then further intensified by social pressure and hypersensitivity to outside stimuli, another common symptom of autism.
And what do her leftist/socialist handlers and puppet masters pulling her strings do? ? Encourage her to have even more fear… and instill even more panic into her. Can you say "Mental Abuse " ? ?
I'd like to see how she could handle real debate on the subject… or a serious question and answer session. But that would never be allowed. Her speaches and meetings are fully stage managed and controlled so she will never face a real challenge.. Her handlers know it would be embarrassing.
Greta is being used for a politico-economic agenda by the far left….

  15. Another celebrity who travels on private boats and jets in order to save the planet yet Prince Harry and Megan are only having 2 kids in order to reduce waste, what a joke!

  16. You know, I'm totally unsurprised that only mentally ill children believe in global warming oh sorry I meant climate change (because the world isn't getting warmer like your pseudoscience predicted, it shifts temperatures like it did way before humans).

  17. Natural climate change associated with the grand solar minimum mini ice age of the 1600's has returned for its 400 year cycle. Expect radical weather, radical temperatures, meridional jet stream flow, record snowfalls, glacial growth, global cooling, Polar Bear population booms, falling sea levels, blooming deserts, galactic influences, cosmic rays, wandering magnetic poles, volcanic uptick, earthquakes, mud floods, giant hail stones and associated catastrophes with famine from crop failures leading to peak food shock and real climate migration, which has NOTHING to do with the man-made co2 global warming climate change theory. See ice age farmer, adapt 2030, John Casey, Tony Heller, Piers Corbyn, grand solar minimum news, ice age now dot com, etc.

  18. TED talks really have taken a nose dive lately, between this and that weirdo from Queer kids stuff, can we please get back to the people that have something interesting or just intelligent to say please!

  19. 2:35 “ everyone keep saying that climate change is an existential threath, and the most important issue of all… yet they just carry on like before…”.
This phrase………… just said it all

  20. I've heard once before about this "6th mass extinction". I'm intrested in knowing more about it. Does anyone have any material on it?

  21. Ha ha, white people have too much time on their hands. Give your money to billionaires in the third world so they can build big factories to fight global warming. Or was it the ice age?

  22. She should smile more. She looks cute when she smiles. That is how serious I take her. I am on the spectrum and understand that every mass extinction has resulted in great leaps in evolution. What comes after us will thank us for our contribution.

  23. Lovely, multi nationals are using young girls and disabled ones at that now to do their bidding . What a sick world we live in.

  24. This is just another puppet-child voicing someone else’s extreme agenda. Adults attempting to co-opt the child’s assumed authenticity is an act which borders on the criminal. I hope people can see through these parroted, propagandist words and actually come to their own conclusions. I won’t be taking my cues on any topic from any pre-programmed Stepford child.

  25. This is the kind of propaganda used in wars of the past. Sorry, doesn't work with me, please take your climate cult somewhere else!

  26. sorry little girl,,,,nothing can be done now,,,,ITS TOO LATE we have passed many tipping points…enjoy your last 5 or 10 years….wont be stopped now

  27. When "leaders" eagerly listen to this mentally ill teen-ager, you see how urgent it is to choose real leaders who do not push hoaxes like this one presented here.

  28. I think Greta is doing one thing wrong. She says that everyone should stop flying but think about everyone that works on a plane or the plane companies. The Mass billioners just dissapear because their money stops coming in because everyone stops flying.

  29. there are a lot of if's in this argument. There are many assumptions that had she listened to experts in Sweden ( Hans Rosling and others ) she would understand things are pretty good and getting better. She would learn about the natural processes of planet earth. She would know and be comforted by the knowledge that there are people who over the decades and centuries have been doing plenty to make the world a better place. She would not have to worry herself into ill health. Rather, if she did go to school, she too would be equipped to get out there and really make a difference in making people's lives better, by doing stuff. As it is she relies on if's and assumptions, to make statements that are alarmist and untrue. Its a shame, because she has a lot of potential.

  30. Greta is a great kid, but, perhaps – people aren't acting so much because climate change is not what most people think it is……. ? Who viewing this comment is actually a realy scientist? And, who knows that the classic line 'oh but 97% of scientists agree' is a lie….if you don't believe me, look up John Cook the Australian cartoonist. And, I'm an honours undergrad in environmental science. Modern climate change is sensationalised and emotional, not empirical. Even Patrick Moore, the founder of GreenPeace agrees.

  31. Honestly its all talk and besides isnt she Just a child? Nuff said. She is a joke. Even our so called politicians are a joke.

  32. This girl is proof that idiots will rule the earth, not because they are smarter, but because they are so many. Warning global warming is a fraud.

  33. So many psychological problems for this 16 year old who looks like she's a 9 year old boy. She probably doesn't eat to not having a period to avoid causing pollution. Plants need carbon and plants give us oxygen. How can having a bunch of refugees flooding Europe help the carbon footprint? So if she proposes not eating cows, wouldn't that lead to more animal grazing worldwide? If everyone just ate fruits and vegetables, wouldn't we still need water/ I'm surprised she didn't bring up global sterilization. She is going to promo air tax.

  34. Lol – Now she's crossing the Atlantic ocean via sailboat, because she refuses to fly.. Funny, how she shows that her way of life is impossible to do if not either wealthy or a lunatic. And on top of that ended up causing even more pollution, because they had to fly a second boat crew to USA to bring her back.

If you're finding her an inspiration, go see your doctor. She is a tool being used by adults to push an agenda, she doesnt understand half of what is happening and is causing harm to thousand of kids and adults, by pushing this 'PANIC!!!!'-agenda.

  35. This channel ought not to be participating in the cynical and immoral manipulation of a minor. The poor girl's condition renders her susceptible to high anxiety and she's being exploited for a problem that doesn't exist.

  36. She speaks at PhD level. I am not sure if she wrote this, but the way she speaks, she is a genius. And probably one of the sanest people I have ever seen, because she is correct that this issue should be our primary focus. To not act to save our own planet is the insane option.

  37. Pippi Longstockings saves the world ? Do me a favour.
The truth is, there is nothing whatsoever we can do about climate change.
This girl with mental health issues (as admitted by her mother) has been cleverly
manipulated by the climate activists and her father. This is a borderline case of
child abuse. I find it rather sad to be honest……She did this publicity stunt of going to
the US in a yacht which has backfired on her, as the crew then had to fly back home.

  38. The message is so clear and powerful! I wish more people would listen to her and to all the people offering solutions to climate change.

  39. What a load of Bullock's. Poor girl getting used to push the agendas so we now pay more green tax. The climate is always changing and always will. The hypocrisy of this new propaganda makes me sick

  40. It's Swedish News, they don't show much about the problems there. and the government doesn't care about what the people think.
