School for The Blind Christmas Tree Sale


>>>IF YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR TREE UP, DON’T WORRY. THE INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND IS HOLDING THE 18TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE SALE THIS SATURDAY. MANY OF THE TREES ARE GROWN THERE RIGHT ON THE CAMPUS.>>MARY MILZ TALKS WITH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WHO PLANTED THE SEEDS THAT KEEP ON GIVING.>>Reporter: HERE AT THE INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND, VOLUNTEERS ARE GETTING READY FOR THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TREE SALE. THE PRECUT TREES FROM NORTHERN INDIANA. SOME 300 OTHERS YOU CUT ON YOUR OWN. PART OF THE SCHOOL’S TREE FARM. IT BEGAN IN THE MID-’90s BEEN DAVID, A FIFTH GRADE TEACHER AND TREES FROM THE DNR NO BIGGER THAN THIS.>>WE GOT THE CLASS OUT HERE, AND PUT IN 100 TREES. AND TOLD THEM BY THE TIME THEY WERE SENIORS THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO SELL THEY WILL AND USE THEM FOR THE CLASS GIFT.>>Reporter: THE FIRST SALE RAISED $700.>>THEY WERE THE KIDS THAT STARTED IT, AND PUT IN THE FIRST SET OF TREES.>>Reporter: OF COURSE, THE TREE FARM GREW WITH FUTURE CLASSES CONTINUING THE TRADITION. LAST YEAR THEY RAISED $11,000 FOR THE STUDENT ACTIVITY FUND.>>YOU HAVE TO LEARN.>>Reporter: AND EVEN THOUGH HE RETIRED EIGHT YEARS AGO, HE STILL GO TOES THE FARM WITH HELP FROM VOLUNTEERS.>>YOU CUT THEM AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN BECAUSE YOU DON’T WANT PEOPLE TRIPPING ON THE STUMPS.>>Reporter: THE CHARLIE BROWN TREES ARE CUT DOWN, RECYCLED AND BRANCHES USED FOR WREATHS AND SWAG ALL HANDMADE.>>THIS IS THE BUNDLING PART OF IT.>>Reporter: THE SO-CALLED WREATH GIRLS WILL MAKE 200.>>WE NEVER HAD ANY IDEA IT WOULD SNOWBALL.>>Reporter: AND THEY HAVE BEEN WORKING THE WREATH LINE SINCE THE VERY FIRST TREE SALE.>>WE HAVE A LOT OF FUN. SPREADING THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS AND HELPING.>>Reporter: AND THEY ARE AMAZED HOW IT GREW.>>I DRIVE BY AND I GO, I CAN’T BELIEVE WE DID THIS. THIS IS WHAT IT TURNED INTO. IT’S REMARKABLE REALLY.
