Iowa students devote week to digital citizenship lessons

APP. ALYX: NEW THIS MORNING,
CENTERVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL
STUDENTS ARE SPENDING TIME
LEARNING ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA
ACCOUNTABILITY. THIS IS A CONVERSATION THAT CAME
UP A LOT IN THE LAST WEEK IN
REGARDS TO CARSON KING. LAUREN, WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM
TEACHERS AND STUDENTS? LAUREN: WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT,
MIDDLE SCHOOLERS HAVE ONLY LIVED
IN A WORLD WITH SMART PHONES. THAT IS WHY TEACHERS AT HOWAR
MIDDLE SCHOOL IN CENTERVIL
DEDICATED A PORTION OF EACH DAY
FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK TO SHOW THEM
HOW TO BE MORE SOCIALLY
INCLUSIVE. STUDENTS SAY THEIR PLATFORMS OF
CHOICE TODAY ARE SNAPCHAT,
INSTAGRAM AND TIK-TOK. THE DAY WE SAT IN ON THE CLASS,
THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT RECENT
TWITTER CONTROVERSIES. TEACHERS HIGHLIGHTED PAST
OFFENSIVE POSTS BY CARSON KING
AND A FORMER “DES MOINES
REGISTER” REPORTER. WHILE THESE STUDENTS MAY ONLY BE
13 AND FAR FROM LOOKING FOR A
JOB, TEACHERS REITERATE THERE
COULD BE RAMIFICATIONS FOR WHAT
THEY FEEL SAFE SHARING ONLINE
TODAY.>>BACK WHEN HE WAS 16 YEARS
OLD, HE HAD SOME NEGATIVE
COMMENTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND NOW
THAT’S BLASTING OUT.>>I DON’T THINK SOME PEOPLE
SHOULD BE POSTING THE THINGS
THEY DO AND SENDING SOME OF THE
THINGS THEY DO, BUT IT’S GOING
TO HAPPEN. LAUREN: WE ASKED TEACHERS IF
THEY HAVE ANY TIPS FOR PARENTS
WHO WANT TO START CONVERSATIONS
WITH KIDS. THEY ENCOURAGE PARENTS AND OTHER
EDUCATORS TO ASK QUESTIONS
HAVE STUDENTS SHOW THEM HOW THE
, APPS ACTUALLY WORK.
