  6. I'm 82 years old and was taught to read…in kindergarten…by the phonics method. That public school was one of the very few that had not switched to the "Dick And Jane" books. I was "jumped" to second grade as soon as they knew I could already read. Reading was taught ONLY in the first grade. There were NO reading classes after the first grade. My family moved and I was forced into a school that used the Chinese method for teaching reading. Years later…when I was in the sixth grade…I was sitting there with classmates who were stumbling over words I could have read in kindergarten. It's been suggested by those with Trump that he should abolish the NEA. That would be a good start, but a better one would be to simply abolish the public school. It's simply not found in the Constitution.

  12. When teaching your child to read, always emphasize with them that the
proper reading order should be from left to right, and top to bottom. To
adults, this may seem so basic that anyone should know it. However, our
children are not born with the knowledge that printed text should be
read from left to right and top to bottom, and this is why you
sometimes see children reading from right to left instead – because they
were never explicitly taught to read from left to right. When teaching
your child how to read, always emphasize this point with them.
