First Americans’ Teacher Education grant program at UNC Pembroke

The FATE program gave me
opportunities that just being a regular education
student at UNCP wouldn’t have. For example, we did have some
professional development
opportunities that kind of exposed me to things
that teachers were already
getting prior to graduating. There are opportunities to take
field trips, And it just kind of exposed me
to things that the traditional classroom setting at UNC
Pembroke could not have, had it not been for the FATE
program. And just giving you the
opportunity to not worry about the financial burden of
book, tuition, and again, I can’t stress the
supplements enough, or that stipend during my
student internship, because it supported my family.
So, I thought that was– That was just a huge piece. And then just the contacts that
I was able to make within the
program, there were other Native American
students that I got to meet, and form relationships with that
are still part of– are still professional colleagues
today. There are opportunities out
there available to help young American Indian students
that want to become educators.
