Education Secretary visits juvenile facility


INCARCERATED STUDENTS THIS AFTERNOON AT THE PENDLETON JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. DEVOS CAME TO SEE THE COMPUTER CODING THE INMATES ARE LEARNING. NINE JUVENILES ARE PART OF “THE LAST MILE” PROGRAM, WHICH IS BASED IN SAN FRANCISO AND TRAINS INMATES IN 12 PRISONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL SKILLS. BETSY DEVOS/U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION “THIS IS THE THIRD PROGRAM NOW THAT I’VE VISITED THAT IS ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND BE PREPARED FOR RE- ENTERING SOCIETY” TYSON BERRY/INMATE FROM INDIANAPOLIS “I WAS MOSTLY EXCITED TO EXPLAIN TO HER WHAT WE DO IN THIS PROGRAM AND HOW IT BENEFITS US AND WHAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.” THE JUVENILE INMATES SHOWED OFF THEIR CODING PROJECTS THEY ARE WORKING ON DURING A HOUR-LONG VISIT TO THE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. 01
