I’ve seen her do that live. That is for real.
– I swoon over very few people, but Lizzo is one that just
makes my heart so warm. And I’m so in love with her.
– (FBE) So, Lizzo has been blowing up this past year
with her music rising on the Billboard charts,
performing at events like Coachella and Glastonbury
and being invited on shows such as Jimmy Kimmel,
the Ellen Show, and RuPaul’s Drag Race.
– I’m just so happy for her. She’s been working her ass off
for the last 10 years, and people are just now
starting to take notice of her. And I think that’s really cool,
’cause you’re finally seeing your work pay off.
– (FBE) So, with so many new artists trying to make it into the industry,
what do you think it is about Lizzo that’s been able
to make her stand out and kind of rise up in the music business
like this? – I think that’s just
the energy she brings. She’s owning everything she’s doing,
and all these people are like, “Yes, I could relate to her so much.”
– She has a really good level of self-love right now,
and she channels into her music, and she wants other people
to feel that too. – She’s such a relatable person,
and then all her music is just so good too.
So it’s like, for you to write all this music and be somebody
that I feel outside of a studio I could hang out with
and we’d just have a blast, I’m like, that just makes me wanna
follow everything you’re doing. – People, they heard her music,
and it’s just so blunt and direct, but it’s– you can tell
it’s very like personal and emotional too.
You also don’t see really that many artists
who are fat. It’s just a fact.
The last fat person I can remember that blew up– and they weren’t
that fat– was Adele. It’s been so great to see, like,
the past few years, how it’s been getting slightly better,
and I’m seeing more representation, more people who look like me.
– (FBE) So, Lizzo reportedly started getting involved with singing
and rapping as early as 14 years old, and she eventually signed
with Atlantic Records in 2016, releasing her first
studio album a year later. In 2017, she released the song
“Truth Hurts,” which was the first video we watched,
but it became what some would call a viral sleeper hit
and began to gain more traction after the release
of her 2019 album, “Cuz I Love You.”
– Oh, wow. I heard “Truth Hurts” in a movie, and that’s where
I was like, “Oh, this song’s really cute,”
and then I looked it up. But I didn’t–
I thought it was a new song. – (FBE) Since then, “Truth Hurts”
has become Lizzo’s first song to become a top 10 hit
on the Billboard Hot 100. And the music video has amassed
over 60 million views as of recording this episode.
So, why do you think it took her over two years for this song
and for Lizzo to get the attention they have now?
– You know what’s funny is I asked myself
the same question, ’cause the first Lizzo song
I heard was “Good as Hell,” and that was probably
earlier this year. And I didn’t know that was
from even earlier. – I was like,”This is
such a great song. Where has this artist been?”
– Society now is ready for artists like her.
Timing is everything, and this is her time.
– Sometimes, it just takes time. Some of the best artists
that you’ve seen rise have taken a while to rise.
When Gaga released “Just Dance,” she was touring that for years–
a year and a half before it really popped off.
It goes to show you that you might be the finest musician
out there and release a fire track, but maybe it won’t be
until you release your second album that people really start to go back
and realize, “Oh, this bitch has been lit from the jump.”
– So much music is released all the time now,
whether it’s on streaming services or places like SoundCloud,
where a lot of artists are starting to just come out,
and it’s making the industry a lot more saturated,
so it’s a little bit hard to stand out now.
So, it makes sense that it took her a little while
before it blew up organically. You can put out all
of your genuineness and hope for the best,
but you also have to be a little bit patient.
And I feel like that’s what she did, and it’s paid off. And now,
she’s just swimming in cash. – (FBE) So, Lizzo has talked
about how she’s struggled with body issues
since an early age and has since become an advocate
for body positivity and self-love while making diversity
the focus of her music in regards to one’s body,
sexuality, race, and more. – Ah, that’s the thing.
And that’s one of the reasons that I was drawn into it.
– (FBE) What are your thoughts on how Lizzo uses her love
for music and her platform to kind of discuss these more
sensitive topics like this? – I think that’s so important
when you have a platform that big to become an activist
for whatever it is that you’re passionate about.
I have a lot of respect for her for bringing together her activism
and her advocacy with her music. – It’s needed. I think
it’s extremely important, and I think that she
is a smart human being and a woke bitch for doing so.
You need to use your platform for the betterment of everybody.
And if you speak positivity like you’ve been doing
and just the hope of, you know, a happy future, I guess,
people will listen and people will follow.
– I really liked her music, but when I found out about–
You know, I watched her video. I was like, “Oh,
this is what she looks like,” which was not really
what I was expecting. And her message and just
what she’s all about, it made me really, really
wanna check her out way more. When I was in middle school
and high school, I was afraid of being associated
with the word “fat,” ’cause you didn’t see anybody
who was fat on TV or in music. And so, it’s just amazing
seeing someone who is my size being successful.
– (FBE) So finally, after listening to some of her music
and learning a little bit more about Lizzo as an artist,
what do you think is next for her? – Oh my god. I want
at least four more hit albums. – She’s gonna be that artist
that has, like, Lizzo featuring Beyonce, and I’m ready
for that one. When Beyonce is a feature on hers,
that– oh, god. I just– Musically, she is about
to kill everything. – She’s just gonna continue
to put out great music. I know that she wanted
to be Ursula in the Little Mermaid. I could see Lizzo in anything,
and it would make me happy. – She can only go up from here really.
This album was super good. I hear people talk about it non-stop.
As long as she continues to do her thing and continues
to just create music that she really enjoys
and has a passion for, but also continues her message,
the message that makes her Lizzo, she can go nowhere but up. – Thanks for watching this episode
