A teacher’s first day of school

♪♪ I did my undergrad at
University of Portland and I got my masters in
teaching at Gonzaga University. I’m here at Shaw Middle
School and I’m gonna be teaching math this year. I’ve only ever
student-taught, I’ve never had my own
classroom before. This is my first year of
teaching so trying to win with the trust of, you
know, 25/30 students in a class, it’s something that
you think about, you know it keeps you up
a little bit. There’s a lot of planning
that goes into the first day I think. The first is when you
make your impression and I really wanna make a good
impression so I’m talking about it with my
colleagues in the Dream Academy, talking a lot
with myself and my mind about what I’m going
to do with myself in a classroom. So yeah a lot of things to
still think about at this point. Welcome to my
class, I am Mr. Jones. I’m going to be your
teacher this year. Welcome, welcome. The reason why I became a
teacher and what I’m most excited to do is to sort
of spread my own knowledge and passion for
mathematics to a wider audience; to share with
them that math is not just something that occurs
in this sort of abstract setting of the classroom
and standardized tests, but it’s something that
is not only useful in the world but actually it’s
just sort of omnipresent, it’s all around us and you
can see it everywhere, you just look for it. You know I think it’s very
important to retain the curiosity that I had when
I was at the age of my students and to show them
that you know at my age I still have curiosity and
interest in and passion for the things that I’m
trying to get them to learn. You know I love math,
I think it’s awesome. Like legitimately if I
wasn’t teaching math I would still be doing math
on my own time, and that’s who I am. I’m someone who wants to
inspire my students to see math in the way that I do,
I want to show them how cool it is.
